Observations of some Wild Orchids in Denmark

INTRODUCTION

For 15 consecutive seasons the number of wild orchids growing in an area of Gentofte Municipality north of Copenhagen, Denmark, was counted and registered. The area covers only about 0.2 square kilometres, but includes a variety of habitats, such as the edges of a lake, wet sunny meadows, small darker woodlands (with alder, birch or willow), patches of bog moss, as well as difficult accessible marshy spots.

RESULTS
In the period studied, three new species have been found: In 1990 Dactylorhiza maculata ssp. fuchsii was seen for the first time, and the first observation of D. majalis ssp. praetermissa was done the year after. Besides this, since 1992, low plants of D. purpurella have been recorded. In 2000, possible Dactylorhiza-hybrids were registered.
Unlike most of the other orchids, a plant of Corallorhiza trifida may live underground for several years, but may also flower at least two years in succession.

FUTURE UPDATES
In the present season which started early April and probably will last until October (when the final counts of Epipactis helleborine notoriously are to be done), the 2001-column of the tables will be updated at least weekly
.
